Android on Telstra HTC HD2

Android on Telstra HTC HD2

Aug 16, 2010

There has been alot of work done to port the Android OS to HTC HD2, the guys at XDA Developers have done a remarkable job.

I have a HTC HD2 which is with Telstra (this phone has been modified for Telstra) standard is 900Mhz but its changed to 850Mhz for Telstra.  I modified my HTC HD2 to Android just over 2 weeks ago.

My current configuration is :

  • Windows (Standard) that came with the phone when i purchased it
  • HSPL - SPL 2.08.0000 SPL 2.08.HSPL
  • Radio_2.10.50.19_2
  • FROYO 2.2 WITH SENSE

I had a few issues with the earlier builds but the latest build from the 7th August 2010 seems to be rock solid. I have had no issues with :

  • Connectivity
  • Voice Quality
  • Speed
  • Camera
  • Video
  • Audio
  • Call Stability
  • Applications

I will be updating this post each week with my own personal experience on running android on my HTC HD2.

Please leave comments and let me know your thoughts about the android port project…

Update: 08-09-2010

Tried the V2 build from darkstone , this made my phone very unstable it seemed ok but after a few hours the screen started to freeze and the phone became very unresponsive and started to lag.

I will be giving this another go by doing the following:

1. Formatting the card
2. Updating the SD card with the latest build.

I didn’t really want to do this as i managed to get the V1 version of Android working quite well with my HTC HD2 with all the application and it was really really quick . I linked my google & facebook contacts and it made it easy to contact anyone via email / sms / facebook & twitter.

More updates later :-)

  1. hey, have you got any videos of it working, and how can i upgrade my device so it can run android, im stuck there, as all the other places ive tried havent got how to upgrade the radio and stuff, any help would be great!!

    good work with the developing!

    • I haven’t got any videos.. but it is quite easy to upgrade the radio and run Android. The steps you need to follow are install HSPL , this will allow you to upgrade your radio . I am currently running radio 2.10.50.xx this seems to work well with telstra call quality is perfect ..

Please let me know what you have done and i may be able to guide you

      • thanks man, ill give it a try and let you know how it works,

  2. Thank yo very much for this awesome article. I’ve read your articles for a decent time now, and they are always getting better. :) Cheers

  3. Hi,

I’ve been trying to install Android on my Telstra HTC HD2 for the last few days and have had no luck, each time I try to install android the phone restarts and stops when loading the kernel.

Are you able to provide the steps and the software/tools you used?

I’m not happy with WM6.5 and any help you could provide with installing android would be great.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    • Hi

Did you do a HSPL ? As i had the same issue and i got around this by updating the HSPL version. Once this has been done
      Android should work.

      Thanks

      • Hi Kumarn,

I have installed HSPL3 and still have this issue.
Do you know which HSPL you used?

        Thanks,
        Mark

        • Hi

I used HSPL3 and also i updated my radio version to this Radio_2_10_50_19_2 this will get rid of the robotic voice that gets heard when you are on the call .

Let me know how you go.

          • Hi,

this is driving me crazy, seems easy but it just wont work.

Do I need to install a custom rom for this to work?, at the moment the phone has the telstra software.

Do you know of a site that provides step by step instructions and links for the software?

            Thanks,
            Mark

          • Hi Mark

You do not need a custom rom. Can you list the steps you followed i may be able to pick up a step that you have missed . I didn’t do anything special with the Telstra HTC HD2.

Ok maybe let me know the following:

            1. Which Android version you are using ? Where did you get it from ?

            2. What steps are you taking to launch Android, as i had a few problems in the beginning ?

Did you update your radio version ?

            Thanks

  4. YESSSSS, just got it working.

    Thanks for your help.

  5. I just got the HTC Incredible. I adore it. Much superior than the Droid or Droid X IMHO. The X is just too big. The HTC is still right-sized enough and does all of the stuff I need. look into it if you need the best.

  6. Mike Sharrott /

    Hello,

Does following your approach above mean that you can no longer run Windows 6.5? Or can you still pick which OS you want to run?

    Cheers,

    Mike.

  7. Hey! Your post was great! it was very inspiratory to me. I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I must admit its GREAT!

  8. Can you help out by providing links of where you downloaded hardspl version 3 and changed the radio? After you do that, do you then just run the android file?

  9. hmm.. well I now have
    SPL 2.08
    ROM 1.72.841.0 (82124)
    Radio 2.08.50.05
I then ran CLRCAD from the android folder on my storage card.
Then I ran Haret – it took a few minutes with a black screen and was looking good, then it did a reboot and nothing happened. Just went to normal windows screen. Is there an icon you are supposed to tap or something or does it just come up?

  10. Seriously happy i stumbled upon this excellent website, will make sure to book mark it so i can visit regularly.
