Wireless Setting for Home

Jul 14, 2010

If you live in a street where you can see your neighours wireless router well then they can probably see yours. Most routers are plug and play. You need to spend a little extra time just so you can secure your connection so it can’t be used by anyone else but you.

Making the following changes :

1. Change Default Administrator Passwords (and Usernames)
2. Turn on (Compatible) WPA / WEP Encryption
3. Change the Default SSID
4. Enable MAC Address Filtering
5. Disable SSID Broadcast
6. Do Not Auto-Connect to Open Wi-Fi Networks
7. Assign Static IP Addresses to Devices
8. Enable Firewalls On Each Computer and the Router
9. Position the Router or Access Point Safely
10. Turn Off the Network During Extended Periods of Non-Use

Can reduce the risk of someone high jacking your internet account and using all the usage or hacking your pc for sensitive information.

These are some of the popular routers

  • Netgear
  • Linksys
  • Belkin
  • D-Link

Always monitor your usage and view your router logs for pc’s that have leased a ip address from your router.

  1. I would like to exchange links with your site http://www.itechnsk.com
    Is this possible?

  2. TL;DR; but you have pretty pictures.

    Sent from my iPhone 4G

  3. I have, after nearly a year of working at it, created a wireless network in my house without buying a router. Internet on the couch!

  4. Strange this post is totaly unrelated to what I was searching google for, but it was listed on the first page. I guess your doing something right if Google likes you enough to put you on the first page of a non related search. :)
